Western Sydney is growing in population, infrastructure, and innovation. The next few years and beyond will see a huge jobs boom across a range of interconnected industries as a result of government and private investment.

This will herald a ‘balancing out’ of Sydney’s employment distribution. The West won’t be competing with the CBD or the North Shore, but rather offering complementary opportunities and services. The more broadly industrial zone will see development opportunities arise from new businesses, infrastructure, housing, educational facilities and healthcare hubs across key locations like Parramatta, Blacktown, Campbelltown and Liverpool.

As Sydney’s commercial hubs decentralise from the city centre, we expect to see more and more opportunities become available across the following industries:

Property and construction

From WestConnex to the new airport at Badgerys Creek, the first boom of employment will come for those associated with the planning, building and management of these largescale projects – there will be particular demand for those with engineering and infrastructure experience.

Additionally, the knock-on effects of population expansion as a result of the increase in jobs will likely mean smaller-scale property development for residential and commercial businesses.

Service-related industries

As these building projects come to fruition and businesses begin operating, there will be huge need for service providers in satellite areas. IT, financial services, business services, accounting and logistics will all be in high demand to service the needs of the many businesses that will spring up in the wake of this growth.

With the proportion of Western Sydney residents with tertiary qualifications continually increasing, this is great news for qualified professionals who will no longer be burdened with lengthy commutes.

Manufacturing

As a traditional employer in Western Sydney hubs like Blacktown, manufacturing will continue to be an essential industry for Western Sydney – but likely in the form of high-tech ‘smart’ manufacturing, a high-growth vertical, along with food and beverage, consumer, pharmaceutical and therapeutic manufacturing.

Those currently employed in these areas won’t be developed out of a job; rather, they will be offered opportunities to cross-skill or upskill in new areas of manufacturing.

Sales

Good sales teams are always in demand, but particularly so in times of strong economic growth when business is booming. Those with a strong track record in sales will find plenty of job opportunities within the Western Sydney area. This is true whether they are in smaller local businesses providing services to larger corporations, or talent required within those corporations.
