Wooden block letters spelling 'SELF IMPROVEMENT'.
Try this quick exercise to get fast and effective feedback on your performance at work. It is refreshingly easy and will take no time at all.
One note of caution though, you might need broad shoulders and a dash of resilience.
Don’t ask if you don’t want to know the answers!
Email your colleagues (this is one time when it is OK to hide behind email) and ask them:
“What should I:
  1. stop
  2. start
  3. continue?”
Why? Because everyone has good and bad – or not so desirable – qualities. On the converse, you’ll also have positive specific and unique traits which make you, well, you.
Once you have digested the feedback, both good and bad, you can decide what you need to amplify, change or just keep right on doing.
If you want to widen the exercise a little, you can also ask them for three words that describe you. This will give you an idea of what persona you may be portraying in the workplace and you can decide if that is how you want to be seen, and modify your behaviour if you need to.
The email could go something like this:
Hi <name>,
Weird request – I am asking around the office for some feedback because I want to know what I’m doing well and what I need to improve on. It’s hard to judge for myself, so would you mind letting me know what you feel I should:
  1. stop doing
  2. start doing
  3. continue doing?
Be nice, but not too nice!
Thanks,
<name>
